SUMMARY:BCREGMED Media Engagement Workshop
DESCRIPTION:News media set agendas\, shape policies and impact spending. Issues that are effectively profiled by the news media are seen as more important than those not receiving such attention. However\, often the people most expert in a particular field have difficulty translating their deep knowledge into commentary that is accessible and engaging to a lay audience made up of those who don’t have a science background or specialized vocabulary. BCREGMED is providing a two day media engagement workshop for its graduate students\, post docs\, and PIs. The goal being to provide support with concrete tools and strategies to increase their communications effectiveness when sharing information about any aspect of their work with the broader public through news media. \nWRITING COMPELLING COMMENTARY \nThis workshop provides participants with the confidence and tools to contribute their expertise to the public discourse through compelling\, short-form written commentary for newspaper op ed pages and online sites. It helps scholars to: \n• Identify elements of their work most likely to be of interest to a broader public and the news media;\n• Apply a 5-step approach to developing a persuasive\, focused written argument;\n• Learn some self-editing strategies and the process of submitting commentary to news media gatekeepers. \nThis is a TWO-DAY workshop taking place September 21st and September 23rd from 10am-12pm. Register below!

SUMMARY:How to be a Better Ally in Research and Study
DESCRIPTION:Building a Respectful Community: Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace\n\nIn this session\, participants will learn what it takes to build a respectful and inclusive community by focusing on practices and policies that centre equity and diversity. Beginning with a discussion of the terms equity\, diversity\, and inclusion (EDI)\, the group will explore how EDI matters in the work and research spaces at UBC. This is followed by an examination of bias and microaggressions\, how they manifest and what we can do about them.\n\n\nLed by Rachael Sullivan from the Equity and Inclusion office at UBC and taking place September 16th from 10am-12pm\, this session will draw from a variety of perspectives and utilize interactive learning to help build skills to bring into the research and workplace. \nAbout Rachael: \n\n\nRachael lives\, learns and works on the traditional\, ancestral and unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) and Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) People\, as a settler. Rachael joined the Equity and Inclusion Office (EIO) in 2014 after completing her doctorate in the Department of Sociology (2005-2012). Since then\, Rachael has worked with a variety of students\, staff and faculty member of UBC to raise awareness and implement practices and processes that embed equity and inclusion to better support the diversity of the campus community. One such project is the launching of the Beyond the Binary @ UBC video. Currently\, Rachael is working closely with the Office of the VP of Research and Innovation\, co-leading the UBC Inclusive Washroom Consultation\, and supporting the engagement with conflict through Conflict Theatre @ UBC.\nSign up below to get the ZOOM details for this virtual meeting!

SUMMARY:Tissue Clearing and Expansion
DESCRIPTION:BCREGMED and the Dynamic Brain Circuits in Health & Disease team are excited to offer a full day workshop to facilitate the use of tissue clearing and expansion techniques in the regenerative medicine lab. \nNovember 7th\n9am-4pm \nDMCBH Koerner Labs Conference Centre\nFirst floor\, UBC Hospital Koerner Pavilion\n2211 Wesbrook Mall\nVancouver\, BC Canada\nV6T 2B5 \nPurpose\nBiological specimens are intrinsically difficult to image.  Currently used tools and methods\, which cut two-dimensional sections of tissue samples to provide insight into the cellular components\, lack in their ability to reveal the systemic nature of tissues and organs which are inherently three-dimensional. On the other hand\, imaging deep into intact tissues brings with it its own problems as a result of the obscuring effects of light scatter and the limitations of most commercial microscopes. \nTechniques to eliminate this scatter and provide understanding into the true behavior of tissues and organs have been developed\, however to our knowledge these techniques being under-utilized in research labs in BC due to their complexity and lack of appropriate equipment.  With the purchase of a new light sheet microscope for the Biomedical Research Centre at UBC\, tissue clearing and expansion will be made possible however training is needed on the various protocols of expansion and clearing\, 3D image analysis\, and troubleshooting to make sure these techniques are implemented effectively. \nTentative format \n\nJoshua Vaughn (University of Washington): details expansion and staining protocols with examples of expanded samples (30 min)\nJonathan Epp (University of Calgary): wide analysis approaches and open source clearing methods\n (30 min)\nZeiss: Data acquisition methods (30 min)\nZeiss: 3D image analysis (30 min)\n\nLUNCH & COFFEE BREAK sponsored by Zeiss \nHands-on component: Attendees apply their knowledge and analyze cleared tissues using software and pre-acquired files provided by Zeiss (2-3 hrs)

SUMMARY:2019 Health and Regenerative Medicine Hackathon
DESCRIPTION:After a very successful first event at UVic last year\, we are making our 2nd annual Hackathon even bigger! With a cross-campus Hackathon happening between UVic and UBC! \n🧬 What is a Hackathon? 🧬 \nA ‘traditional’ hackathon is an event where programmers get together for a short period of time to collaborate on a project. Typically\, participants have 24-48 hours to consecutively work on the challenge with the goal of delivering a completed product/project at the end of that time period. \n🔬 BUT 🔬\nThis is not your typical Hackathon! FIRST: you do not need a background in coding or computer science to solve our problems\, SECOND: you have a 2-3 week lead in period before the hackathon weekend to have access to mentors and infrastructures to aid you in your design\, and THIRD: the health industry is largely multidisciplinary\, so participants of this Hackathon can come from medicine\, engineering\, biology\, you name it! \nOn September 12th we kicked things off at UBC at the BRC. We presented this year’s challenges to eager students who will have until the hacking weekend to recruit friends\, think about their challenges\, approach mentors\, and have access to the infrastructure required to work on their challenge designs! If you weren’t there\, don’t worry: Sign up today and get access to our SLACK channel to connect with a team and receive daily updates! 👯‍♀️ \nOn October 4th starting at 6PM we’ll start our 24 hour push at the Biomedical Research Centre Rm 351 (or Fort Tectoria at UVIC)\, where teams will get together and put all these resources to use! October 5th at 6PM\, hackers will get to go home and get a well-earned sleep\, and come back to UBC or UVIC recharged on October 6th at 10:30AM and pitch their ideas to a panel of experts. \nWHATS IN IT FOR YOU \n\nPRIZES 💸💸💸\nNETWORKING WITH INFLUENTIAL MENTORS AND JUDGES 🤓\nEXPERIENCE FOR YOUR RESUME 🕴🏻\nAND THE POTENTIAL TO HAVE YOUR CHALLENGES PICKED UP BY THE RIGHT PEOPLE AND IMPLEMENTED! (💸💸💸)\n\nFREE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP WORKSHOP SEPTEMBER 27TH\, 3-4PM\n\n\n\nClick Here to View Full Recap\n\nTHANK YOU TO OUR HACKERS\, MENTORS\, JUDGES AND SPONSORS!!

SUMMARY:Making Writing Easier
DESCRIPTION:Who is this workshop for?  \nResearchers who are struggling with writing manuscripts\, grants\, research program descriptions for applications\, scholarships or thesis. \nWhat is this workshop about?  \nResearchers tell me that writing is hard. They are overwhelmed by our ideas\, unsure where to start\, and feel lost at times. Melissa E Anders has been developing and implementing grants with scientists for more than 15 years and she has a deep curiosity and understanding about human nature and how we can harness our true selves. It is at this intersection that she draws from to support researchers in making writing easier. \nIn this workshop you will learn how the writing process works\, how to design your own unique writing process and practical ways to begin to clear the obstacles that come up for you so that you can get started\, maintain momentum and complete your writing projects.”\n– Melissa E. Anders \nFEEDBACK FROM PARTICIPANTS \nSeptember 25th: Students/Trainees\nSeptember 26th: PIs/Scientists/Faculty/Project Managers \nLOCATION: Room 2301\, The Nest UBC\nTIME: 8:30AM-12:30PM
