SUMMARY:BCREGMED Media Engagement Workshop
DESCRIPTION:News media set agendas\, shape policies and impact spending. Issues that are effectively profiled by the news media are seen as more important than those not receiving such attention. However\, often the people most expert in a particular field have difficulty translating their deep knowledge into commentary that is accessible and engaging to a lay audience made up of those who don’t have a science background or specialized vocabulary. BCREGMED is providing a two day media engagement workshop for its graduate students\, post docs\, and PIs. The goal being to provide support with concrete tools and strategies to increase their communications effectiveness when sharing information about any aspect of their work with the broader public through news media. \nWRITING COMPELLING COMMENTARY \nThis workshop provides participants with the confidence and tools to contribute their expertise to the public discourse through compelling\, short-form written commentary for newspaper op ed pages and online sites. It helps scholars to: \n• Identify elements of their work most likely to be of interest to a broader public and the news media;\n• Apply a 5-step approach to developing a persuasive\, focused written argument;\n• Learn some self-editing strategies and the process of submitting commentary to news media gatekeepers. \nThis is a TWO-DAY workshop taking place September 21st and September 23rd from 10am-12pm. SUMMARY:How to be a Better Ally in Research and Study
DESCRIPTION:Building a Respectful Community: Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace\n\nIn this session\, participants will learn what it takes to build a respectful and inclusive community by focusing on practices and policies that centre equity and diversity. Beginning with a discussion of the terms equity\, diversity\, and inclusion (EDI)\, the group will explore how EDI matters in the work and research spaces at UBC. This is followed by an examination of bias and microaggressions\, how they manifest and what we can do about them.\n\n\nLed by Rachael Sullivan from the Equity and Inclusion office at UBC and taking place September 16th from 10am-12pm\, this session will draw from a variety of perspectives and utilize interactive learning to help build skills to bring into the research and workplace. \nAbout Rachael: \n\n\nRachael lives\, learns and works on the traditional\, ancestral and unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) and Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) People\, as a settler. Rachael joined the Equity and Inclusion Office (EIO) in 2014 after completing her doctorate in the Department of Sociology (2005-2012). Since then\, Rachael has worked with a variety of students\, staff and faculty member of UBC to raise awareness and implement practices and processes that embed equity and inclusion to better support the diversity of the campus community. One such project is the launching of the Beyond the Binary @ UBC video. Currently\, Rachael is working closely with the Office of the VP of Research and Innovation\, co-leading the UBC Inclusive Washroom Consultation\, and supporting the engagement with conflict through Conflict Theatre @ UBC.\nSign up below to get the ZOOM details for this virtual meeting!
