We are now offering $15K salary stipends to SIX lucky trainees and are inviting trainees and PIs to participate in our virtual dragon’s den competition! \nHow it works: interested trainees or principal investigators will register to pitch their project below. Abstracts will be assessed by our team to determine if the research is relevant to regenerative medicine and successful applicants will be notified and given a five-minute time slot at our event (trainee or PI or both can present). During the presentations\, we will have a panel of experts (the dragons) vote anonymously on which projects will be awarded the grant! Then you are awarded the grant! SUMMARY:UBC Tissue Clearing and Expansion 2021
DESCRIPTION:BCREGMED and the Dynamic Brain Circuits in Health & Disease team are excited to offer a TWO DAY online workshop to facilitate the use of tissue clearing and expansion techniques in the research lab. \nSeptember 22nd and 23rd\n10AM – 1PM both days\nZOOM \nPurpose\nBiological specimens are intrinsically difficult to image.  Currently used tools and methods\, which cut two-dimensional sections of tissue samples to provide insight into the cellular components\, lack in their ability to reveal the systemic nature of tissues and organs which are inherently three-dimensional. On the other hand\, imaging deep into intact tissues brings with it its own problems as a result of the obscuring effects of light scatter and the limitations of most commercial microscopes. \nTechniques to eliminate this scatter and provide understanding into the true behavior of tissues and organs have been developed\, however to our knowledge these techniques being under-utilized in research labs in BC due to their complexity and lack of appropriate equipment. DESCRIPTION:Regenerative Rehabilitation: an emerging field that integrates regenerative medicine with rehabilitation therapies \nSimon Fraser University and BCREGMED are proud to present a first-of-its-kind\, virtual Regenerative Rehabilitation Research Symposium taking place January 19th and 20th\, 2021 (10AM-12PM both days)! This unique event seeks to explore the interface of tissue engineering and regenerative therapies with rehabilitation techniques. \nBackground: \nAs most of us know\, regenerative medicine involves the regeneration or replacement of diseased cells and tissues using tools such as stem cells\, engineered tissues\, biomaterials\, or molecules. Two pressing questions surround this approach: 1) it is necessary to precondition biological materials prior to implantation? If so\, what are the best methods for doing so? 2) Once the materials are implanted\, what rehabilitation techniques should be used in order to best promote their integration? \nFor example\, when engineering muscle tissue or stem cells for implantation to treat volumetric muscle loss\, should the muscle constructs be “exercised” beforehand to promote differentiation and resilience once implanted? How should the affected limb be exercised once the muscle has been implanted? Are there optimal techniques for promoting its successful integration and function? \nThese are the questions that the new field of “regenerative rehabilitation” seeks to tackle\, and ones that will be discussed at this exciting two-day event! \nAre you a trainee working on these questions? DESCRIPTION:News media set agendas\, shape policies and impact spending. Issues that are effectively profiled by the news media are seen as more important than those not receiving such attention. However\, often the people most expert in a particular field have difficulty translating their deep knowledge into commentary that is accessible and engaging to a lay audience made up of those who don’t have a science background or specialized vocabulary. BCREGMED is providing a two day media engagement workshop for its graduate students\, post docs\, and PIs. The goal being to provide support with concrete tools and strategies to increase their communications effectiveness when sharing information about any aspect of their work with the broader public through news media. \nWRITING COMPELLING COMMENTARY \nThis workshop provides participants with the confidence and tools to contribute their expertise to the public discourse through compelling\, short-form written commentary for newspaper op ed pages and online sites. It helps scholars to: \n• Identify elements of their work most likely to be of interest to a broader public and the news media;\n• Apply a 5-step approach to developing a persuasive\, focused written argument;\n• Learn some self-editing strategies and the process of submitting commentary to news media gatekeepers. \nThis is a TWO-DAY workshop taking place September 21st and September 23rd from 10am-12pm.
